கோவை மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலை அடிவாரப் பகுதிகளில் மிகப்பெரிய அளவில் கனிமவள கொள்ளை நடந்துள்ளது. பழங்குடியினர் நிலம், அரசு பொறம்போக்கு நிலம், கோவில் நிலம், நீர்நிலைகள் உட்பட பாரபட்சமின்றி 50 அடி முதல் 150 அடி வரை கனிமவள கொள்ளை நடந்துள்ளது. இதனால் யானை வழித்தடம் முற்றிலும் அழிக்கப்பட்டது. இது மனித யானை மோதலுக்கும் வழிவகுத்துள்ளது. இதுகுறித்து நேரில் ஆய்வு செய்ய நீதிபதிகள் வருவது அப்பகுதி மக்களிடையே மகிழ்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. Public and activists have appealed to the Judges, coming for direct inspection, to take drone shots to assess the exact situation of sand that is being illegally mined. They say that an estimated Rs 60,000 crores of sand has been mined out of the western ghats foothills destroying the environment and causing human- animal conflict.
